Drinking Water is not only Encouraged, it is Recommended

Like everything we do in Ki’s Kitchen, we like to offer you the best bang for your nutrition buck, so to speak.  So while drinking water, why not get an added immune boosting benefit out of it? I mean, I get it. Drinking water can be incredibly boring.

We all need to drink more, but for many it can be very daunting task.

However, did you know that adding certain herbs, spices and fruits can not only add great flavour to your water, but will also give your body that extra added boost that we all need? This includes especially the colder months of fall and winter.

Does Lemon Water Really Help?

Yes! Room temperature lemon water is a must for everyone, everyday.  Don’t have lemons readily available?  No problem, limes will work but you will need tp double the amount that that of a lemon.

Signs your Body is Telling you that you’re Thirsty

1. You Have a Dry Mouth

A dry mouth may seem like an obvious sign that you’re in need of a little hydration, but be careful which beverage you reach for. Sugary drinks won’t do the trick long-term. Drinking water is your best option to keep your mouth and throat feeling moist longer, and to get rid of that awful pasty and dry mouth feeling.

 2. You Have Dry Skin

Your skin is your body’s largest organ, and it needs water just as much as the rest of your body. So, dry skin is one of the first signs of dehydration. When your skin is dehydrated, it negatively affects your body’s ability to get rid of excess dirt and oil, which can lead to acne, pimples, etc.

3. You’re Super Thirsty

A dry mouth is one thing, but being overly thirsty is the feeling that you absolutely need water, right away. Dehydration causes your brain fluid levels to become unbalanced. When you get this feeling, it’s your body screaming at you to help get it back on track — so grab start drinking water!

4. Your Eyes Feel Dry

Yes, the amount of water you drink even affects your eyes too. Without water, your tear ducts dry up which leads to dry, bloodshot eyes. If your eyes feel dry, itchy or irritated, chances are, you need some water, don’t be shy.

5. You’re Experiencing Joint Pain

Water is extremely necessary to keep your bones and joints working properly. It helps nutrients move through your blood and into your joints, and it allows waste products to move out of your joints.

6. You Fall Sick Often

A steady flow of water throughout the day allows your body to continuously flush out toxins and transport nutrients to where they are needed. If you aren’t drinking enough water, toxins can sit in your system. This, can cause an illness or a virus. Hydration has a huge impact on your immune system.

 7. You Constantly Feel Tired

Water makes up the majority of your blood and other body fluids, and even mild dehydration can cause blood to thicken. This forces your heart to pump harder so that it can carry blood to your cells and organs, resulting in that tired feeling. If you feel tired, drained or a little out of it, these could be signs that you’re not getting enough water.

What Temperature Should you be Drinking Water at?

Always drink room temperature or warm water. Although it might feel good, or thirst quenching, we should always stay away from drinking ice cold water.

Why? Because cold water is akin to pouring water on a fire but expecting the fire to still burn ferociously. Drinking cold water slows your metabolism and digestion, two (2) things that we don’t want to have happen — do we.

The following are a few suggestions to make your water a little bit more exciting!

After dinner, consider adding dry ginger to your water. This will help reduce inflammation and aid with digestion.

The next four (4) suggestions to add to your water, should only be consumed on an empty stomach;

  1. Pineapple – reduces inflammation
  2. Cucumber – great for the skin, helps to flush out toxins
  3. Honey (real honey, no added sugar) – helps to cleanse liver, when combined with lemon it boosts weight loss
  4. Coriander seed – aids in digestion and facilitating bowel movements

Just a note, excessive thirst and urination (I am talking about drinking glass after glass) can be a sign of diabetes. A small finger stick can make all the difference.
